The love that God had placed in Adam’s heart could then be reflected in the love Adam could express to another person. We were made with the capacity to love, and to be loved in return…
When God made human beings, everything was perfect. He created them in His own image, and intended that they should be loved by Him and live in a full relationship with Him. He made human beings to be loved, and gave them the ability to love in return. God intended that this relationship should allow them to be secure, free from fear and fulfilled. Human beings were created to live in perfect health, and to reign over the earth as a reflection of Gods greatness:
God said let us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the [tame] beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth.(AMPCE) (emphasis mine)
God loved the first man named Adam, and to meet Adam’s need for companionship, God made the first woman, named Eve. The love that God had placed in Adam’s heart could then be reflected in the love Adam could express to another person. We were made with the capacity to love, and to be loved in return. This desire to give and receive love produced a deep need for acceptance, love and fulfilment which god intended that only He could fully satisfy.
That desire is still there, and it expresses itself in our quest for answers. In Douglas Adams’ book ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’, 42 is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. Thankfully, the reality is even simpler! God related to Adam by walking with him, talking with him, and sharing His heart with him. God loved Adam, and in that love Adam found true fulfilment and security.
Imagine the most perfect reciprocal relationship: that was the relationship between God and Adam. Then something happened that made a mess of everything.
