Keys to a Happy Home

A lot of people get married, but never understood the purpose of marriage. The outcome of not knowing the purpose and principles of marriage will lead to pain and bitterness

Onoson Orotoma

It only takes a few hours or minutes to get married but it takes a lifetime to build a home. In spite of many failed marriages, broken homes, divorce cases and disillusioned and failed relationships, marriage is still a good idea, just like everything else in life, the key to any good success is rooted in the application of truth, marriage is not different. To have a happy marriage, it is extremely crucial to find out what the keys to the application of truth in the subject of a happy home are. The health of a marriage determines the health of the home. Marriage is an adventure and it’s success is not automatic. Only a deliberate positive effort will lead to a peaceful and prosperous home.

Causes of Disappointments in Marriage

The expectations and responsibilities in marriages is the cause of problems and instability in itself. When two people come together to get married, there are individual expectations and responsibilities and when these expectations and responsibilities are not well managed, it could lead to disappointments and probably lead to separation, and eventually a divorce.

“A lot of people get married, but never understood the purpose of marriage. The outcome of not knowing the purpose and principles of marriage will lead to pains and bitterness”

The wisest king that ever lived, the person of Solomon gave us three fundamental principles to the success of a happy home. “By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; Through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures; The wise prevail through great power, and those who have knowledge muster their strength.” (Proverbs 24:3-5). According to Dr Myles Munroe, “When the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable” This quote is very important to the subject of marriage because a lot of people get married or want to be married, but never understood the purpose of marriage. The outcome of not knowing the purpose and principles of marriage will lead to pains and bitterness. Solomon laid down the three key components for having a happy home. They are Knowledge, Understanding and Wisdom.

When challenges and difficulties arise in the home, love alone wouldn’t be able to withstand the challenges…

One of the major reasons for breakdown of homes is not the lack of love, or no love, but the lack of knowledge. Knowledge is defined as Information, awareness of something or the state of being aware of something.

The Concept of Knowledge in a Marriage

In my interaction with young people that are into relationships or who wants to get married, one of the things they talk about a lot is, love. But according to Solomon, it is not love that is needed to build a happy home. Rather, what is required first is knowledge. Hosea 4:6 “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” One of the major reasons for breakdown of homes is not the lack of love, or no love, but the lack of knowledge. Knowledge is defined as Information, awareness of something or the state of being aware of something.

Having the right information and being properly informed about the intricacies of marriage is precedence for peace and happiness in the home. When challenges and difficulties arises in the home, love alone wouldn’t be able to withstand the challenges, but having the right information about the institution of marriage will always give a solid foundation to overcome, no matter the circumstances. Knowledge is power and true love cannot be void of knowledge. The key to your spouse’s heart is your knowledge about him/her. If you know him/her enough, you can handle any situation that arises between the two of you. Your knowledge of his/her weaknesses and strengths is the key to resolving issues when they arise.
