He has demonstrated His great love by giving up Jesus Christ, His only son, to die for the remission of our sins. This was done in order for the work of reconciliation to be complete and this was done on the cross of Calvary.
One of the most popular issues about the Christian faith in this century is the dilemma of some people, with their opinion about God; whether He is just or unjust. This has been a crux for arguments and discussion amongst scholars, new Christian coverts, theologians, to mention a few. But the question here is does it really matter what we think about God?
Does it Matter what we think?
The pre-eminence nature and the eternality of God and His power have given Him the prerogatives to do whatever He chooses to do. He is GOD, and we, as men, do not have any right to question whatever He chooses to do. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Romans noted that “What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion”. (Romans 9:14-15). The Almighty God has all the powers in the heaven and the earth and over all that are in there. The creature does not have the capacity to question the supernatural power of God. As long as He is God, He chooses to do what He likes. “But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?” (Romans 9:20-21).
He has a purpose for all he does and does what He feels is right to all creatures. The notion or view of man does not count in all…
He is Merciful and a Consuming Fire
The nature of God manifests mercy and compassion. Paul recorded in his epistle to the Ephesians, “But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us”. (Ephesians 2:4). He has demonstrated His great love by giving up Jesus Christ, His only son, to die for the remission of our sins. This was done in order for the work of reconciliation to be complete and this was done on the cross of Calvary. It is also crucial to note that God is also a consuming fire; “Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire”.
Our good works, charity and human philanthropic activities are not enough to bribe God…
John Piper mentioned in his sermon titled; Today’s Mercies for today’s Troubles, Tomorrow’s Mercies for Tomorrow’s troubles. “The Lord gives pain and pleasure to each day as he deems best. We don’t always agree enthusiastically with what God deems best for us. It is hard for us to feel that he is kind beyond all measure when he gives us pain”. God knows the best and He does what feels right to Him because He is all-knowing – The omniscient God. He has a purpose for all he does and does what He feels is right to all creatures. The notion or view of man does not count in all.
Faith and Not Works
According to the letter to the Romans, Paul stated categorically in Romans 9:30-32; “What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith; but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness, have not attained their goal. Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone”.
What sets a man free is the knowledge of God and His doings. We can only grow in the knowledge by having faith in Him through His son Jesus Christ. The revelation of whether He is just or unjust is revealed when we choose to recognise Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Our good works, charity and human philanthropic activities are not enough to bribe God, but the faith that we have in the Son, Jesus Christ, the mediator of the New Covenant.
